TL;DR: A legendary blast from the past, sequel to the grandpup of FPS games still has enough bite to make you howl with retro joy. Fans of FPS games should play some of these old influential titles to see how far their influence has spread and developed.

Would I play this instead of tidying the kitchen? [Maybe].

What is it?

Wolfenstein 3D (1992) is one of the earliest and most influential first-person shooters, casting you as Allied spy B.J. Blazkowicz as he escapes from Nazi imprisonment and dismantles their war machine. Spear of Destiny is a standalone prequel, sending B.J. back behind enemy lines to recover a stolen holy relic before the events of the main game.

How it Plays

Gameplay is pure, fast-paced corridor shooting: you sprint through maze-like levels, blasting enemies, collecting keys, and hunting for secret rooms filled with treasure and ammo. There’s no aiming up or down, its just raw run-and-gun momentum. The simplicity makes it snappy and addictive even decades later. The pixel art, chunky sound effects, and over-the-top bosses are iconic, and Spear of Destiny adds more levels and a slightly tighter difficulty curve. What makes them stand out is how foundational they are: these games established the core FPS formula that countless later titles built upon.

Overall: 5/10 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Metric Rating Notes (Video)
Tail-Wag Fun 🐾 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ An enjoyable blast, though missing a lot of modern features, mouselook in particular is missed dearly!

Belly-Rub Accessibility ❤️ 🐾🐾☆☆☆ No tutorial, simple controls, but lacking any kind of map, or control customisations!
Drool-Worthy Presentation 💧 🐾☆☆☆☆ Very dated by modern standards, and is quite pixelated on high res screens.
Zoomies & Flow 💨 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Excellent flow to levels and gameplay, very smooth.
Treat Value 🍪 🐾☆☆☆☆ No longer available to purchase on the steam store.

Good Doggo (Pros)

  • Fast, straightforward run-and-gun action that still feels responsive.
  • Loads of secrets, treasures, and hidden rooms to discover.
  • Historic importance as pioneers of the FPS genre.

Ruff Spots (Cons)

  • Very repetitive level design and enemy types.
  • No vertical aiming or modern conveniences can feel limiting.
  • Minimal story and presentation compared to later shooters.

Verdict

A foundational slice of FPS history — simple, fast, and still surprisingly fun despite its age.
