TL;DR: A visually ambitious sequel that aimed for sci-fi grandeur, good in many ways, but doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the original.

Would I play this instead of tidying the kitchen? [Maybe].

What is it?

Unreal II: The Awakening is a first-person shooter released in 2003. It continues the story from the original Unreal, placing you in the role of Marshal John Dalton in a war-torn space setting, right after you awaken aboard the spaceship Atlantis

How it Plays

You complete mission-based levels across planetary bases and space stations: explore, shoot enemies, handle objectives, and interact with your crew between missions. Fairly standard FPS stuff. The visuals still stand up really well, but there are some issues with UI scaling at high resolutions can hamper the experience.

Overall: 5/10 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Metric Rating Notes (Video)
Tail-Wag Fun 🐾 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Good, moments of strong action and exploration.
Fetch-Depth 🎾 🐾🐾☆☆☆ Enough systems to engage, but lacking standout innovation.
Belly-Rub Accessibility ❤️ 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Approachable for FPS fans.
Drool-Worthy Presentation 💧 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Looks and sounds impressive for its time.
Zoomies & Flow 💨 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Pacing is solid early, but repetition shows later.
Treat Value 🍪 🐾☆☆☆☆ Strong hours per £; fair DLC/MTX.

Good Doggo (Pros)

  • Impressive visuals and tech for its era: the game looks polished and futuristic.
  • Solid science-fiction setting with large environments and space-opera vibes.
  • Good single-player focus, offering a complete campaign without heavy multiplayer reliance.

Ruff Spots (Cons)

  • Gameplay feels somewhat generic and doesn’t innovate much beyond existing shooters.
  • Level design leans too linear and some stretches of gameplay feel repetitive.
  • The multiplayer component is largely meh, and can be ignored.

Verdict

Unreal II doesn’t hit the legendary status of the original Unreal, but it remains a competent and enjoyable sci-fi shooter. If you’re interested in immersive single-player FPS games with strong visuals and don’t mind leaning into linear structure, this one’s worth checking out — just don’t expect it to redefine the genre.
