🐾 Review: Double Dragon Trilogy Video

Played on: [Steam/PC] · Release: [2015] · Designer/Studio: [Dotemu] · Time: [⏱ 60m] · Players: [1-2] · Store Link : Double Dragon Trilogy

TL;DR: A nostalgic beat-’em-up bundle that still packs punch when played with a friend, though it shows its age in repetition and rough edges.

Would I play this instead of tidying the kitchen? [Absolutely].

What is it?

Double Dragon Trilogy is a collection of the first three arcade beat-’em-up classics (Double Dragon, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone), ported to PC. It offers single-player or local/co-op two-player modes, letting you walk the old streets, punch thugs and rescue the damsel (or hunt treasure stones) in proper retro style. The original Double Dragon is one of my all time arcade classic memories!

How it Plays

You move a character with left/right and up/down directions, punch, kick and grab enemies, or use melee weapons. The gameplay is simple: progress through levels, beat waves of enemies, rescue or retrieve your goal. The control scheme allows for punch, kick, throw, elbow etc., and you or a friend can team up. Graphics and sound aim for classic arcade authenticity. Difficulty and enemy patterns reflect the arcade roots: early enemies go down quickly, but harder enemies require repeated hits or clever positioning.

Overall: 6/10 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾

Metric Rating Notes (Video)
Tail-Wag Fun 🐾 🐾🐾🐾🐾☆ Lots of fun, particularly for nostalgia fans!
Fetch-Depth 🎾 🐾☆☆☆☆ As simple a game as possible, basic moves and repetitive structure.
Belly-Rub Accessibility ❤️ 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Simple controls make it easy to pick up and play
Drool-Worthy Presentation 💧 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Retro style!, Very faithful to the original arcade look and sound
Zoomies & Flow 💨 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Mixed bag, fun bursts early, repetition later..
Treat Value 🍪 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Good for nostalgic or casual play, less strong for extended sessions

Good Doggo (Pros)

  • Classic beat-’em-up gameplay still holds up when you enjoy simple, direct action
  • Local co-op or two-player mode retains the fun of arcade couch-co-op sessions
  • Retro presentation, moveset and original feel evoke nostalgia for fans of the genre

Ruff Spots (Cons)

  • After several hours the levels and enemy encounters start to repeat, best enjoyed in shorter sessions!
  • Double Dragon 3, is a weak entry in the series, its got rougher animation and balance than the other entries.
  • The port lacks added extras like improved progression, modern UI polish, or bonus content, for better or worse it’s essentially the raw originals re-packaged.

Verdict

Double Dragon Trilogy is a decent way to experience (or re-experience) the early beat-’em-up era. It works best as a short burst fix or a nostalgia trip with a friend. If you value deep mechanics or lengthy modern content it will feel shallow, but if you enjoy simple co-op brawling it still delivers a solid punch.

Recommendation Tier : 🐾🐾 🐾- Solid Set
