TL;DR: A paw-sitively brilliant zoo-building masterpiece, it’s deep, rewarding, and sure to keep strategy hounds wagging their tails for hours.

Would I play this instead of tidying the kitchen? [Absolutely].

What is it?

Ark Nova is a heavyweight strategy board game where players design and manage modern zoos with a focus on conservation. Each turn, you’ll play cards to build enclosures, sponsor projects, and support worldwide conservation efforts, aiming to balance popularity with ecological impact.

How it Plays

At its heart is a clever action-selection system: you have five action cards (Build, Animals, Cards, Sponsors, and Association) that shift in strength based on their position in a row, forcing you to juggle timing and efficiency. The game blends tableau-building, resource management, and spatial planning on your zoo map, with hundreds of unique cards ensuring huge variety from play to play. The pace is deliberate but satisfying, with the endgame trigger being the dramatic crossing of Appeal and Conservation tracks. What makes it stand out is its extraordinary depth and replayability, giving players immense freedom to chase their own strategies while still feeling tightly balanced.

Metric Rating Notes (Board / Video)
Tail-Wag Fun 🐾 🐾🐾🐾🐾☆ Brilliant heavy game, steep learning curve, but well worth the effort.
Fetch-Depth 🎾 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 Deeply strategic, the interplay of systems, goals and cards is brilliant.
Belly-Rub Accessibility ❤️ 🐾🐾🐾☆☆ Well explained(if complex) rules, useful icon guides, and component design. Not one for people looking for a simple light game though, the complexity may put some off.
Drool-Worthy Presentation 💧 🐾🐾🐾🐾☆ This game looks good, card artwork is excellent, everything else is clear and relatively easy to understand.
Zoomies & Flow 💨 🐾🐾🐾🐾☆ Once understood, turns can flow quickly, this is a game that could lead to AP in some players.
Treat Value 🍪 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾 This is a lot of game, and will reward multiple plays over time. The amount of depth and combinations of actions, animals and systems, will keep this fresh for a long time.
